How to Get Hot Water From Keurig (for Tea, Oatmeal or Soups)

Quick instructions on how to get hot water from Keurig for your tea, instant soup, or oatmeal.

how to get hot water from Keurig

Q: Can you use Keurig to make hot water? I sometimes need it for tea or my oatmeal but my Keurig doesn’t have this option.

Answer: Yes, you can use your Keurig to get hot water only. This is perfect if you want to use a tea bag instead of a tea k-cup because it’s less expensive. It’s also great for instant soups, oatmeal, or hot cocoa.

Some models come with this option, but you can get just hot water even if you don’t have hot water on demand. Here’s how to do this with different Keurig models:

Keurig models with Hot Water button

Keurig K-Elite
Turn on the unit and wait until the water is heated. Press the Hot Water button. All five cup sizes will blink. Select the desired cup size and the brewer will start dispensing hot water.

Keurig K-Elite is currently the only model with Hot Water option.

Keurig models without hot water on demand

You can easily get just hot water even if your Keurig doesn’t have this option. To do this, simply lift and close the handle without inserting the pod and brew just like you normally would when making the coffee. The machine will dispense hot water only.

Keurig K-Select, K-Classic and K-Compact
Turn on the unit and wait until it heats the water. When it’s ready, lift and close the handle without inserting the pod, and choose the desired cup size to dispense hot water.

Keurig K-Cafe
Lift and close the handle without inserting the pod. The coffee and latte & capp buttons will blink. Press the coffee button. Select your cup size and press the blinking Brew button.

Keurig K-Mini, K-Mini Plus
Add between 6 – 12 ounces of water into the brewer. Lift and close the handle without inserting the k-cup. The brew indicator light will flash to indicate the brewer is ready. Press the Brew button. After about two minutes the brewer should start dispensing water.

Keurig K-Slim
Lift and close the handle without inserting the k-cup, select cup size, and press the Brew button.

Keurig K-Duo, K-Duo Plus
Lift and close the handle without inserting the pod and turn on your machine. The pod and carafe buttons will blink. Select Pod then select brew size. Press the Brew button to start dispensing.

How to get hot water from Keurig 2.0

To dispense hot water with Keurig 2.0 K500 you need to lift and close the handle without inserting the pod, and the machine will offer you the option to dispense 6 ounces of hot water. To do this you will need to hold the brew button. If you don’t want to hold the button or you want to dispense more than 6 ounces of water, you can hack the machine using this little trick.

To dispense hot water on Keurig 2.0 K200 Plus, lift and close the handle without inserting the pod. The display will say Dispense hot water. Press continue, select your desired cup size and press the brew button.

How hot does Keurig water get? Keurig brews the coffee at 192°F, so that’s the maximum temperature you can get from your Keurig brewer.
