These Black Friday shopping tips below will help you get the best deal on the coffee maker you want and help keep frustration and overspending to a minimum. Plus: I’ve found some great deals for you.
1. Find your ideal machine before you go to the store
Small kitchen appliances are among some of the most common impulse purchases, especially around the holidays. To make sure you’re happy with your machine, make sure the model has all the features you need. Maybe you’ll want a programmable machine that you can set the night before. The auto off can also be useful for busy mornings. Maybe you want a machine that makes a really awesome coffee at just the right temperature and timing. How easy it is to use and clean it’s also important. Make a list of 2 or 3 most important features your new coffee maker must have.
2. Make sure the model has not been discontinued and you can easily find the pods/ filters/ parts
Check the official website to see if the model is still available for purchase. Take a look at current pod varieties and prices (if it’s a single serve machine). Keurig Rivo espresso and cappuccino system is very nice, but it has recently been discontinued. Starbucks Verismo is not the best option (parts are relatively hard to find and customer support is not very good) so I wouldn’t recommend it either. If you know which model you want, quickly google it, check their official website and maybe Amazon for reviews. It will take less than 5 minutes.
3. Set a budget
Is it $100, $200 or $500 coffee maker?! Set a range within your budget that will keep you from overspending. You don’t want your finances to go in the red in November and December.
4. Research deals and check prices online
Before you rush off to the stores on Black Friday, look into deals ahead of time so you can make a game plan. Check Black Friday ads online, Amazon deals and don’t forget to check regular retails prices online. This way you’ll know what’s a good deal when you see one.
5. Shop deals online
According to Forbes, last year about 70% of Black Friday doorbusters were also available at the store’s website, so you might as well stay at home and shop in your pajamas. You will score the same deals.
6. Choose a classic Keurig
Keurig single serve machine is one of the most purchased items around holidays. I know that Keurig 2.0 looks better and has a carafe, but from my experience, a classic Keurig is a better choice. Besides the fact you can only use Keurig branded k-cups and you need to hack a machine to brew all k-cup brands, Keurig 2.0 often has screen issues. Classic series brewer has classic buttons and less sensitive parts but works equally well. Keurig K55 is probably the best choice – nice reservoir size, classic controls and works with all k-cups.
7. The best classic drip coffee makers
Besides Keurig, Ninja coffee bar is one of the most popular brewers right now. It’s a great choice because it’s really flexible and has a ton of different settings. If you want to invest in a really good machine that makes truly amazing coffee at home (right temperature, water flow and time) I recommend Techivorm Moccamaster. Oxo Barista Brain makes great coffee too and also has the auto-brew option. Here’s my list of the best drip coffee makers for home.
8. Best espresso machine for home
In the pod espresso machine category, I recommend Nespesso Inissia. You will need to buy the pods online but besides that, this little machine makes a really nice espresso and it’s easy to use. The machine and frother bundle normally costs around $180, but you should be able to find them for about $100 on Black Friday/ Cyber Monday.
If you’ve finally decided to get a classic espresso machine at home and start learning barista skills, Breville Barista Express or Rancilio Silvia are perfect. Read more about these machines here.
